Church Security Awareness Training (CSAT) are Christian based security programs designed at supporting places of religious worship with education on suspicious activity and situational awareness training.
Our suspicious behavior training module educates church employees, ushers, greeters, volunteers and security personnel how to recognize and respond to suspicious behavior in a religious environment. The class is structured into two distinct topics: education on church safety and security to raise awareness of potential security issues, and recognizing and responding to a person displaying suspicious behavior. We educate on the importance of observing nonverbal communication when conducting a “conversational interview” to help understand if what the person is saying is truthful. The course provides all the skills needed to successfully interview a person in a conversational way to identify a threat against worship safety.
Lesson 1 – Security in Places of Worship
Teaching on how to keep worship environments safe against suspicious activity using a multilayered approach. We look at statistical data on violent acts at places of worship utilizing recent case studies and explore the types of criminal activity facing the modern church and find the biblical connection between security and ministry.
Lesson 2 – Suspicious Activity in Places of Worship
The lesson explores ways to identify suspicious behaviors in worship and a religious environment. Through the use of case studies we learn behavioral warnings that can be used to help identify criminal acts before they occur with examples videos reinforcing the principles of suspicious activity.
Lesson 3 – Surveillance in Worship
When criminal attacks in places of worship are analyzed, the results often show that the offender carried out pre incident surveillance or rehearsed at the church before carrying out the attack. During this module, participants learn the principles of surveillance and how tactics are defined by offenders limiting factors and what surveillance will look like in a religious environment.
Lesson 4 – Conversational Interviewing
Now we understand the threats and what suspicious behavior looks like in religious environments participants learn how to approach a suspicious person and hold a “conversational interview”. We learn methodology and the principles behind effective conversational interviewing through the understanding of questioning choices. During the module participants continue to use practical exercises and videos to understand different questioning styles and prepare for the scenario training to conduct a conversational interview. Interpretation of nonverbal communication and tone of voice are important parts in understanding deception when holding a conversation to determine threat or no threat. Participants are taught the role nonverbal communication plays in assessing if a person displaying suspicious behavior or signs of lying when being spoken to as part of a conversational interviewing.
Lesson 5 – Scenario Training
With the participants now able to define suspicious behavior and body language, now is the time they take action and apply principles learnt in lessons 1 through 4. Whatever your role at the church (custodian, administrator or security team member, etc.) the scenario training will test participants on the principles of observation, body language and the ability to sieve through the information and responses during a conversational interview to determine if the person poses a threat to your worship community or not.
Each participant that completes the program is provided a workbook and certificate of attendance.
